Company History

Digital Telehealth was federally incorporated in Canada in November 1997 to meet the consulting and training needs of the Canadian telehealth industry. The company’s consultants have been involved in many Canadian and international telehealth activities, including:

  • child telepsychiatry and teleradiology in Newfoundland
  • store and forward telenursing consultations in Labrador
  • general teleconsultations from offshore
  • telehome care in PEI
  • making recommendations regarding telehealth activities for the Canadian Space Agency
  • educating Health Canada and First Nations regarding the benefits of telehealth
  • advising on telehealth standards for the Alberta Research Council
  • developing business plans for a number of health regions, e.g. Calgary Health Region, Chinook Health Region
  • evaluating tele-ophthalmology in NWT
  • designing and implementing large-scale telehealth networks for different Provinces and Territories, e.g. Nunavut, and
  • developing telehealth policies and procedures for Nunavut.

Digital Telehealth Incorporated believes that telehealth can be useful and sustainable, both in the developed and developing world. In 2003, the company began to focus on increasing its international telehealth activities and has subsequently leveraged its extensive Canadian experience to obtain international telehealth contracts. In 2004, consultants were contracted by the governments of the Bahamas and Botswana to give advice on how information and communications technology could be used to improve efficiency and access to health services in these countries.

Alliances

Digital Telehealth is a member of the Digital Group, a complementary group of companies with expertise in all aspects of telehealth and e-health. Its corporate direction stresses the need to work collaboratively with other organizations, so as not to re-invent the wheel. To assist client success, we have developed formal working relationships with national and international leaders in telecommunications service and video conferencing specialists. For more information about the Digital Group of Telehealth Companies, see www.digitalgrp.com.

The Digital Group was selected by the Government of Canada to represent the Canadian healthcare industry at the Millennium World's Fair at Expo 2000 in Germany. The company has demonstrated telehealth capabilities within Canada and internationally, including with Canadian Astronaut Julie Payette and Britain’s past Minister of Trade Brian Wilson. Digital Telehealth Inc.’s consultants have provided services to a variety of health organizations and governments. Notably, they were contracted by the Government of Nunavut to help design and implement Nunavut’s IIU Telehealth Network. This state-of-the art, satellite-based telehealth network is Canada’s most northern and largest (in area). It has the potential to save millions of dollars in travel costs per year.
